LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspected rapist who is charged with invading a home in the Wilshire area New Year's Day is behind bars. Now the LAPD wants to know if there are other victims.
The rape happened in the Wilshire area on New Year's Day at about 1:30 p.m.
The suspect in custody served time for a similar crime and was paroled in 2007.
The suspect may be wanted for three or more crimes in Los Angeles and Hollywood.
Damicii Deandre Brown, 35, was paroled last year after serving 14 years in prison for kidnap and rape.
Police say that on New Year's Day 2008, Brown broke into a woman's house on the 2100 block of 8th Avenue in Los Angeles and raped her.
"He pounded on the door in a vehement fashion, trying to get the victim inside to open up," said LAPD Detective Paul Bishop. "When she didn't open the door and went to secure the rest of the house, he came in through a back window -- he sliced the screen. In investigating and canvassing the area, we found that he had been to another house in the area, attempting to do the same thing."
Police say evidence gathered at the crime scene was what they called "fast-tracked" with the help of the Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center. Lab results that would normally take weeks were returned in days.
Detectives say with evidence pointing to Brown, they staked out the South Bronson Avenue neighborhood where Brown's mother lives.
"That location was put under surveillance by our West Bureau Surveillance Unit here, and actually within a very short period of time, he turned up at the front of that residence, driving a Hollywood stolen vehicle, which we were also aware of," said Det. Bishiop. "He was taken into custody at that time without incident."
Word of an arrest was welcome news in the 8th Avenue neighborhood.
"It's a relief," said nearby resident Constance Delee.
"It's kind of scary knowing that somebody's still out there that's doing these things. You don't want to go out of your house. It's kind of scary knowing somebody's out there."
The LAPD is asking for the public's help in identifying more victims. If you have any information, you are urged to call the LAPD West Bureau Sexual Assault Team: (213) 473-0447.
