BISH’S BEAT INTERROGATES JOCHEM VAN DER STEEN!

BISH’S BEAT INTERROGATES JOCHEM VAN DER STEEN!

Dutch hardboiled writer Jochem Van Der Steen is in the interrogation room. The lights are in his eyes and he know he isn’t getting out without giving up what he knows . . .

1. All good interrogations start by getting a subject’s background. So, spill a little about Jochem Van Der Steen and how you came to the writing game.

I’m a Dutch writer who likes to write in English, because the market is bigger and I really like the voice you can create with it. I’ve always been writing stories but with the internet I early on saw a way to share my stories with a bigger audience. I started out writing horror but found my voice writing crime, being a fan of the genre.

2. Your main character in the Tough As Leather Collection, Noah Milano, has a unique background. What was it about this character and his baggage that spoke to the writer in you?

I like people who try to make up for their past. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody does things that may not be very nice. The real heroes try to make up for those actions. That’s why Noah Milano used to be a mob fixer. Aside from that, it makes for an unusual PI-background I hadn’t heard about and ensures a lot of character conflict.

3. You offered a cool bonus short story to readers who bought Tough As Leather. How important are these types of bonuses in today’s publishing market?

I think anything you can do to reward your audience is important for writers that aren’t backed up by big marketing campaigns. I see it as a reward for those people who take a chance on buying something from a writer they may have never heard of before.

4. In your opinion, how are the opportunities in e-publishing changing the game for writers and readers?

It offers the chance for writers who don’t sell millions of copies to reach their audiences. I really like authors that can offer their old books again to a new audience and might continue series they had to end because their traditional publishing deal was lost.

5. Several top reviews give positive mention to the pulp stylings of your stories. Was this something for which you were consciously striving, and do you think pulp-type stories are experiencing a revival?

I love pulp fiction. I also like a story to be fast-paced. I write a lot of short stories about crooks and cops. Those elements make it almost impossible to NOT end up in pulp stylings. I do think with ebooks these days the days of the dime novel and pulps seem to be returning with a modern twist.

6. You’re headed up a new writers group known as the Hardboiled Collective. Tell us what the goals are of the group and where you hope to see it having an impact.

This group of hardboiled writers tries to help out each other’s sales figures by telling their own group of fans about them. The goal is to compete against the bigger authors and make pulp popular. I hope it improves sales of all group members and of course mine.

7. With your Dutch background did you grow up reading American or European authors?

I grew up on Dutch translations of Robert B. Parker, Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane. When I couldn’t find any more translations I started to seek out the original versions. So while I sometimes read European authors I mainly was into Americans… And comic books!

8. What’s next for Jochem Van Der Steen? More Noah Milano tales? Another character?

I will keep updating my blog, www.sonsofspade.tk
and promote the Collective. I will be bringing out a Noah Milano novella soon. I also finished up a story about Mike Dalmas, a salesman and ex-Special Forces guy who is blackmailed into doing the cops’ dirty work.

All right, get outta here, but don't even think of leaving town . . .
