YOUNG RIDERS OF THE RANGE

YOUNG RIDERS OF THE RANGE
Had a fantastic time at the Autry Museum in LA attending the Young Riders of the Range Cowboy Lunch hosted by genre mega expert Rob Word. There were a number of actors there who were interview about their days as child actors in Western TV Shows or Western movies. Some of the anecdotes were hysterical.

Johnny Crawford (Rifleman), who did rope tricks, was there along with his brother Billy Crawford (Laramie). Bill Mumy (The Virginian and, of course, Lost In Space, which did have one Western themed episode) and Jon Gries (who told an amazing story about his time as Button in the movie Will Penny) were lively and entertaining.

My favorite interview however was with Michael McGreevy, who played the cabin boy, Chip Kessler, in Riverboat with Darrin McGavin and Burt Reynolds (including the time Reynolds got mad and bodily lifted McGavin up and tossed him off the riverboat into the shallow river that was part of the set—leading to Reynolds getting fired). McGreevy went on to work in a number of Western movies, including The Way West with Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and Sally Field (in her first role), and Death of a Gunfighter with Richard Widmark, and he had great stories about all of them...You can check out the interviews on YouTube under Word On Westerns...
